NMLS

The Nationwide Multistate Licensing System & Registry — the centralized system used to license and register mortgage loan originators across all US states.

Full Definition

NMLS (Nationwide Multistate Licensing System & Registry) is an online platform that processes and tracks mortgage loan originator licenses across all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, and US territories. Every MLO has a unique NMLS ID number that follows them throughout their career regardless of where they work. NMLS Consumer Access (nmlsconsumeraccess.org) is a public database where anyone can verify an MLO's license status, work history, and any regulatory actions. When an MLO changes employers, their NMLS record transfers with them — only the sponsorship changes. MLOs must renew their licenses annually through NMLS, which includes CE completion verification.
